My mother-in-law paid a debt without me asking her to. Do I have a legal obligation to repay her?

Unless she was somehow jointly or severably liable for the debt, or there was an agreement for testament, you probably could not be successfully sued for the payment of the debt. Payments among family members are generally assumed to be gifts, unless there is significant evidence to the contrary. Moralo you probably owe her at least your gratitude.
Good luck
