termination while pregnant
I have worked at a bank for 2 years. I was terminated 2 days ago, and was not given a reason. I had put in my 2 weeks notice about 8 months ago becasue I had found another job, but they asked me to stay. Now, I am 6 1/2 months preganant and was fired. They have also told me they will not pay me any severance or pay me my vacation time I have acquired. I want to know if there is anything I can do about this

You have a claim for sexual discrimination if you were fired because you are pregnant. You are in that minority class and they gave you no legitimate business reason for firing you. I suggest you contact an employment discrimination lawyer and discuss the facts. You can contact me if you wish. You are probably not entitled to severence pay, but unearned vacation pay should be paid. You can file a complaint for unpaid vacation pay with the Kansas Department of Human Resources in Topeka. Of course you can also apply for unemployment benefits.

It is always difficult to give an accurate answer without all the facts of a situation. However, under federal law, it is illegal to discriminate against a person (woman) on the basis of her pregnancy. In addition, if your employer has at least 50 employees, and you have worked long enough, you might have been entitled to take leave under the Family Medical Leave Act. I just finished representing a woman from central Kansas in a pregnancy case, and we were able to get her case resolved through the mediation process. I strongly urge you to contact an experienced employment attorney to determine if your rights have been violated. One point you should consider is that if you were planning to quit your job anyway, your damages for economic loss will not be that large.
