Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Kansas
I recently turned in a 30 day notice to my landlord. I graduated last year to be an elementary educator. I have lived in my current apartment since April of 2009. I just signed a six month lease in April of this year. In may I had an interview with a school that told me over 300 people had applied. I decided to apply in my home town that is 3 hours away and received a teaching job. Now they are telling me I not only have to pay a full months rent ($725) to terminate the lease, but that this doesn't actually cancel the lease and I will have to continue to pay rent until they are able to rent it. I am very upset, as I am a single mom barely making ends meet. I have begged, but they pretend like there is no way to get me out of the lease. I live in Kansas and looked for laws. I can't find anywhere that says a landlord can make you pay a penality plus make you keep paying rent. What can I do?

As you have probably already learned if you pay the rent, you owe no penalty. The penalty is for when they release you from some of the future rent. You may have to hire counsel to address this with the landlrod.
