Negligence law recognizes the concept of proximate cause. Proximate cause is the immediate or actual cause of the accident. Slamming on your brakes in front of another vehicle would be the proximate cause of the collision, and you would be legally responsible for the damages and injuries. In addition, if you admitted that you did it intentionally to stop the tailgating, you could be held criminally responsible for the resulting damage and injuries.
