I was served a tax assessment and/or warrant (for the state of Kansas) while being detained on drug charges. However, I refused to sign the document, and once the person who served me left, I never heard anything about the issue again until I was transferred (several months later). At that point I was informed I was legally responsible (even though I had not even been convicted of any criminal charges) - and was never given the right to dispute. The criminal charges regarding the tax stamp (and the entire case) were later dropped by the state of Kansas. However, I still have a tax lien owed to the Department of Revenue in Kansas (for $448,000). They are not pursuing me in any way, but I am dealing with it on my Equifax credit report. This public record has seriously lowered my score with this bureau. Is it possible to have this removed from my report without paying it.

A suggestion but not an answer to this complex question. Go online and see if you can find a Kansas form requesting a release of the tax lien. Then call the Dept of Revenue to see if they still have a record of the case and send them the release form. The real problem is that even if released the lien still shows up in the credit records. Sorry for not having a complete answer, but this is a difficult question to try to answer.
