I recently lost my mother and noone was sure of if she had life insurance until a couple of days ago when I received paperwork from her employer stating that she did have. Now she had been living with her mother, my grandmother, for the past several years because of her health and as a result owned very little property. But over the past several years she was in and out of the hospital and has well over $60k worth of medical bills, which the life insurance will not cover, nor did she own anything of value that could be sold to pay for those bills. My question is, who gets the life insurance? I would assume I get it and have to turn around and give it all to the creditors, but I don't know and I am sure that the creditors aren't going to tell me not to give them any money.

The beneficary of the life insurance gets to keep the money. The life insurance carrier can tell you who that is. As to your mother's medical bills, it matters whether anyone agreed to accept responsibility for them.
