If a son dies before his father, who does the father's inheritance automatically pass to, the son's wife or the son's children or is it equally split between the wife and the son's children?

Unless there is some other arrangment or Will provision, daughters-in-law do not inherit. In the case you described, the wife wouldn't get anything, and the portion of granfathers estate that would have gone to Dad, will go to the kids. But, if any of the kids are minors, their money might go to the Mom (duaghter-in-law) as Trustee for the kid(s). It is worth stating that most, if not all, of the estate would go to grandma under the facts you described.
Good luck
