Legal Question in Criminal Law in Kentucky

My boyfriend is a convicted felon. He was recently arrested and charged with recieving stolen property (firearm) and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The gun had been stolen by another party and my boyfriend retrieved the gun to return to rightful owner. Now they are going to try to charge him with two more felonies. We live in Kentucky and my boyfriend is a full time college student recieving grants and loans. This felony will stop all help for school. Is there any possibility with legal help that this could be dropped to a misdemeanor?

It is not possible to give you a clear legal answer to your inquiry without a more detailed evaluation of the facts of your case. There is a slim chance your boyfriend may be able to make a "choice of evils" defense, but there is no lesser included offense (misdemeanor) to the felony of felon in possession.

Your boyfriend should talk to a lawyer as soon as possible. He is best advised to seek the services of a competent Kentucky attorney. He can get a referral to a criminal law specialist from the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, at

Additionally, you can telephone your local bar association for a referral, or can find a good lawyer on-line at the Kentucky Bar Association's Lawyer Referral Service:
