Legal Question in Criminal Law in Kentucky
paying a court appointed lawyer
How can the courts make me pay for a court appointed attorny if I don't have the money to pay? I didn't have the money to pay and that is why the public defender was appointed in the first place.

The Courts have the authority to order you to contribute some payment to the office of public advocacy. I do not know how much the Court ordered you to pay but usually it is a small sum ranging from $50 to a few hundred. This is compared to employing private counsel at several hundreds or thousands of dollars. The money does not go to the individual PD but into the system to assist others when needed. The Court probably was of the opinion that you could contribute something. This can be taken up again. Ask your PD.
