You need to contact the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and make them aware that you are interested in custody. They should contact you and initiate a home evaluation through the interstate compact office of each state. The whole process often takes 4 to 6 months. So, your other option is to file a motion to intervene up in Kentucky and directly ask the court to grant custody. Some judges will do this and others will wait for the interstate home evaluation to occur. It is important to start now, though, because once a child has been in foster care for 15 out of the last 22 months, the Cabinet can terminate parental rights and place the child for adoption.
