Legal Question in Family Law in Kentucky
break up
My question is my boyfriend and I have just broke up he lived with me in my house. He left over a week ago and left his big screen tv dvd player and computer. when I bought my house he came to my house with a puppy he didnt try taking the dog either when he left. Now he is telling me that he is going to take his stuff that I dont care about but he told me that he was going to take the dog that he brought to my house that I have taken care of and paid for. Can he do this?

Re: break up
Many mistakenly believe that living together, rather than getting married, allows one to avoid such things as what you are describing. Unfortunately, that is not true. If he owns the dog, then it is his to get. However, there are legal mechanisms to address this through small claims court. You may have a claim against the boyfriend for leaving the dog with you without paying reasonable fees for his care, etcetera.
If you guys had been married and going through divorce or separation, "custody" of the dog could have been decided in family court. Anyway, this is just food for thought for your next relationship.
