Legal Question in Family Law in Kentucky

Domestic partnership with opposite sex. If you should go separate ways does this need to be dissolved like you do in a divorce. Are there any repercussions that can result in the split of the two people? Our domestic partnership is registered in Oregon, but we live now in Kentucky.

I'll start by saying I don't know. It's unique because this is a heterosexual couple utilizing the legalization of the domestic partnership option given to same-sex couples in other states. It comes down to a question of whether that is actually a marriage, or at least should be recognized as a marriage by another state. My thought is that it needs to be dissolved, because the partnership is in essence a marriage by another name. However, since I don't know if there are any legal differences in Oregon between marriage and partnership, I can't even give an informed opinion. This is one that would take some research to find out, and not one you want to get wrong. I would suggest contacting a family law attorney in Kentucky who will research this question for you, although you will likely pay for the consultation. You are welcome to contact me for a recommendation.
