Legal Question in Family Law in Kentucky
I have legal custody of my 15 year old grandson. We haven't had any contact with his father in over 5 years. Recently my grandson came to me and said he wants to change his last name to mine. He doesn't want to go by his father's last name anymore. His mother is in agreement. How do we go about changing his last name legally.

You can bring a motion before the court to change the child's last name, however, probably the court is going to insist that the child's parents, if they still have parental rights, be in agreement. Once he is 18, however, he will easily be able to change his last name and, possibly, even be adopted by you.
You should check with a local attorney about what your jurisdiction does in these instances. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of uniformity within Kentucky when it comes to family law, so what you can do in one county isn't necessarily what you can do in another.
