Legal Question in Family Law in Kentucky
wedding ring
My husband and I divorced after only 4 months of marriage. We had an uncontested divorce, a simple settlement agreement since we really had no joint purchases and it was signed and done.Final 2 months ago. He is now asking for my wedding ring and engagement ring back. It was never mentioned before. Do I have to give them back?

Re: wedding ring
Your engagement ring and wedding ring are gifts made to you in contemplation of marriage. If you did not go through with the ceremony, you would have to give them back.
On the other hand, once you are pronounced man and wife, the rings are your property. Your ex-husband has no legally enforceable claim to them.

Re: wedding ring
There is an excellent argument to make that rings are non-marital property since they were gifts given to you as an individual. It matters little that they were given by your now ex-husband. In the old days, they would have been part of a "bride price" and expected to be returned because they were not gifts, but consideration for the contract of marriage. Those days are gone, though.
