lost wages from court appearance-civil case
if i am subpoenaed by one side of civil case, is that side responsible for paying for lost wages.

I don't think you will like the answer, but testifying as a witness is one of those civic duties, like jury duty. You are entitled to a small witness fee, just as jurors are entitled to a small fee for their service, but neither party if responsible for your lost wages.
Most lawyers will work with you to minimize the time you spend waiting to testify, but there will inevitably be some waiting. Another witness will run long, the judge will need to take a break in the trial to hear an emergency matter, whatever.
So the best thing to do is communicate with the lawyers on when you need to be there, and take a book, magazine, or even some work to occupy you while you wait. Remember that in most cases you are not allowed to be in the court room until you are called to testify....
