Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Kentucky

I have been working for a local convience store for about a year. I was an assistant manager, and they are bring in a new manager. The new manager just started working today and I had worked with him previously for a different company. So today they fired me. They handed me a written paper that said I had lied on my application and the reason for leaving my previous job was because I was fired for theft. This is not true, I quit due to moving. The new manager told them this lie. He wasn't even working with me when I left the job! I can proved I wasn't fired for theft and I know they can fire me at will but wouldn't this be defamation of character?

Yes, that would be defamation per se, and you can sue that individual for damages. (Provided you can prove he said that, of course. Hopefully you have documentation.)
