Is it legal to Google search images (photographs) and use them as sources for artworks?

No. Stuff on the internet is not free for the taking. If you mean "cut and paste", No. If you mean use them for inspiration, the resulting artwork may be considered a "derivative work", which is copyright infringement without the owner's consent.
