Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Kentucky
am i responsible as a renter for fire damage
a fire started while i was in the bathroom my 2 yr old came and got me. it started on the stove on a burner i didnt think worked and had a pan of grease on. i told the firemen i thought he may have climbed up and turned the burner on but his plastic chairs were not melted and not in the room. pictures show he is too short to reach on foot. the firemen said they didnt turn the burner off and if i had my hands would be burnt. the owners insurance company says we owe them for $5000 in damages because i was neglectful. the owner had his wife paint the burnt cabinets (have pics of it half done). He did buy a gallon of primer, a gallon of paint and replaced a 4x3 area of ceiling. the more i think about it the more i am convinced my son did not do it. he was not burnt and i have a hard time believing he got a chair, lit the stove, put the chair up and came to get me all in 5 minutes. when i went to the kitchen the cabinets and ceiling were already burnt. please help me figure out if i owe $5000. dont they have to prove my son started the fire?
