If a matrimonial home is owned in equal shares between the husband and wife, should there every be a breakdown in the marriage will any equity automatically be divided in two?

as a general rule, property acquired in anticipation of and during the course of the marriage is considered to be "marital property" subject to division, usually in equal shares and that would include equity. There can be modifications to this by the Court depending upon cirmumstances which are viewed in light of the facts of each case.
