Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Kentucky

how do I find out about land inherited

My brothers and I were contacted by a lawyer in KY to let us know that we had inherited some land and a cousin wanted to buy our shares. We asked for an appraisal and recieved one done in 1999. After doing some research I have learned that the cousin actually sold the property in 2001. What step(s) do I take to get copies of the original will (I don't even know who died) and then what do I do about this land that was sold w/o our signatures? What I do know is that our stepfather (who died in 1977) was from KY so that is how we got involved. thanks PS. The law firm who contacted us has the same last name as the cousin AND is the law firm who did the paperwork on the land sale. :)

Re: how do I find out about land inherited

My first reaction would be to send a certified letter to the law firm in Kentucky politely requesting a copy of the decedent's Will together with a copy of the Deed indicating how the property was owned at the decedent's time of death. Give them a specific amount of time in which to respond. If you do not receive their cooperation, I would hire an attorney in their area to look into this and follow up for you, It would help of course if you could contact other family members, friends of your step father, or whoever might be able to bring you up to date on any relatives in Kentucky. Good luck!
