Letter of Warning about Barking Dogs

My question is in regards to my neighbors barking dogs. Several months ago I decided to send an anonomous letter to my neighbor across the street regarding his dogs barking constantly. I printed off some information online for shock collars and a device that emits a high frequency that quiets the dogs along with a nice letter of warning asking him to please comply. Of course, the situation did not get any better and he did not heed my warning. So...I proceeded to write him formal letter and pronounced my final warning to him that I would get the proper authorities involved if he is not do something about the barking. I have had it. I am not one to complain and I can usually deal with dogs barking but these dogs are out of control. I noticed after he took the letter out of the mailbox a police officer came to his home. Is it illegal for me to send him written warnings? And if not, what can happen to me? Thanks.

That would depend on what was in your "warning". It is legal for you to threaten to take any action which you can legally take. In other words, you may threaten to file suit or to complain to the authorities, but you cannot threaten to take illegal action, such as violence or damage/injury to the neighbor, his family, pets, or property.

Constantly barking animals (especially at night) can create a nuisance and you are legally allowed to call the police and/or to file a lawsuit for civil remedies. If your neighborhood has a homeowner's association, they may also have land covenants which cover the issue of barking dogs.

If the situation does not improve, you should seek the specific advice of an attorney in your area. Do not take the law into your own hands or attempt to confront the neighbor face to face. The most important thing at this point is to avoid any situation that could escalate the problem into physical violence, as often happens with cases like this.
