Legal Question in Business Law in Louisiana
Alarm Contracts
I worked for an alarm company for 17 years. It was the companies policy to tell all customers when setting up alarm monitoringthat they could cancel their monitoring for any reason at anytime. For the history of this company they always cancelled customers monitoring upon request. Now I have started my own company and some customers are switching to my company.. Now the original company is telling customers that they are under contracts and can not change companies. Is it legal that this company told customers for 20 years that they can cancel at any time and has never told customers they are locked into contracts and now just because they are switching to my company the are locked in?

Re: Alarm Contracts
I am surprised that you did not have a non-compete clause in your employment contract. However, that said, the fact that the company always let their customers out of their contracts was a courtesy and they can end the courtesy whenever they wish.
Re: Alarm Contracts
It will depend on what is in the contract they have with their customers. I'd be curious to know what was in your contract with the company also. I should be able to help you with this matter.
