Legal Question in Business Law in Louisiana

I had an employee quit on me this morning, with no notice. Our policy has in place an annual bonus, if the company is profitable. My company is not profitable at the moment and she wants her annual bonus, which is not even awarded until the end of November. I also found out she spent her time, or for the fact, my time (Company paid hours) looking for a job on the internet, paper and by phone for the past 2-3 weeks. I do not feel that I should give her this and I am afraid she will blackmail me into getting it. She knows by just making one call, false or not, will bring my company in shambles and she is giving me until noon Monday morning for her "numbers". First off, is it legal to threaten my company, and second, does the law protect my business in any way to keep her from slandering my company.

There are injury actions available in the cases of slander and libel. Usually there are no guaranteed bonuses, unless it is actually a deferred compensation agreement. You owe only wages actually earned. There are criminal charges for blackmail.

Contact law enforcement and tell them what is going on. When she calls have them there or do what the law enforcement tells you to do. It might be wise to check with the LA Atty Gen's office. They are fairly proactive with this sort of thing.
