Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Louisiana
My daughters boyfriend gave her a dog as a Christmas gift. Now that they broke up, after he lied and hit her and tried to strangle her, my daughter, he wants the dog back. The dog was taken to the vet twice since receiving it for checkup and other health issues. The vet records are under my daughters name and she paid for them. As a matter of fact, we, mother and daughter, have paid for everything for the dog since she received it. Several people know that it was a gift so we have witnesses. Can he take the dog back legally? what do we need to do to be prepared if he tries?

No. Once you give a gift, you can't take it back. Tell those witnesses you have to be prepared to testify that the dog was a gift if he tries to sue over ownership of the dog.
You should keep the dog away from him in the meantime. The police will likely be unwilling to get involved, as they will see it as a civil matter. If he takes the dog, you may have to sue to get it back from him. I would keep the dog inside your house and away from him until everything blows over.
