Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Louisiana
gender discrimination
I am a self-employed, female and
Native American construction
contractor. My husband handles the
business, mostly, but at a business
meeting I attended with him today, I
believe a discriminatory comment
was made that I may be able to
pursue legally. The prime contractor
that we are doing some work for,
after a heated discussion, said,''And
so who brings their wife to a business
meeting, anyway?'' He had never
met me before and did not know that
I actually own the company-- not my
husband. And we believe that the
outcome of the meeting was altered
because of my gender and
attendance at the meeting. Could I
pursue this legally? (There were only
four people in the meeting: Myself,
my husband, and the two men from
the prime contracting company.)
Thank you for any expertise and
advice.

Re: gender discrimination
You can't sue a company for sexual harassment or discrimination if you don't work for that company. The contractor may be a jerk, but I don't see anything which could hold him liable. I would let it go and simply refuse to do business with his company in the future.
