I just broke off my engagement to
my fiance. We broke up and now he
wants me to give him back my
engagement/promise rings.He says
he will call the cops to get them

Re: Gift
Very basically speaking, if YOU broke off the engagement, or if it were a mutual agreement, you have to give the ring back....if he broke off the engagement, you keep it.....of course if he wants you back you may have to marry him or give him the ring back then. Save yourself some aggravation.
Re: Gift
Generally, you have to return engagement rings if a wedding is called off. They are generally not seen as gifts, but as things given in anticipation of marriage. In some circumstances, if you can prove that the ring was truly a gift and not tied to a promise of marriage, you can keep it. However, that is a very rare circumstance and it would be near impossible for you to win--especially if you broke of the engagement.
Besides, why would you want to keep it if you aren't getting married? Don't be petty. You will regret it later. Take the high ground and give the ring back.
