Is it legal to carry a gun on your side?

Yes. You need a permit to carry the gun CONCEALED. You can carry it on your side (not concealed at all) without a permit.
There are still certain places you cannot carry a gun into--a federal facility, a bar, etc.
If you want to learn gun safety and get a concealed carry permit, there are many courses you can take all around the state. I just took one up in Hammond not too long ago from a company called TNT Concealed Carry. It was very enlightening.
