Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Louisiana

If I posted a comment on facebook and put a persons name in it but all the information is true is that slander? The girl when she tells her story tells it differently but all of my statements are true and I have proof so if she filed a slander charge on me and I want to fight her do I stand a chance because the cops tell me I am wrong but the info is true.

Truth is always an absolute defense to libel and slander. By the way, it is libel if it is written and slander if it is spoken. They both fall under the umbrella term of defamation. In any form and under any name, though, truth is always an absolute defense and nobody can win a judgment against you for telling the truth.

That being said, discretion is usually the better part of valor. It is best not to gossip in the first place. While you may have a defense, it wouldn't keep them from suing you and causing you to go through the trouble of a lawsuit.

Remember the old addage about counting to 10 before you say something that may be hurtful and waiting 24 hours before sending an angry letter. Most times, after cooling off, you will find that you really don't want to say it after all. Thinking and waiting before you post will save you a lot of misery in your life.
