Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Louisiana

i recently gave a name for a reference from a former employer except they didn't speak to the person i put down and they gave me a bad reference i never received a bad reference from them before is there anything i can do.

A reference is a personal opinion and freedom of speech is a right. It only becomes slander when it is intentional, malicious, without truth, in a public manner and causes actual damage to ones reputation.
