You do have rights against harassing debt collectors, especially if the debt is not owed and you have told them you dispute the validity of it. You can file suit against any creditor who harasses you. Go online and Google a federal law called the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. There is a ton of information online about it. It states what actions are considered to be "harassment" and establishes penalties, including $1,000.00 per "harassing" occurrence plus attorney's fees against those companies that break the law. You can also check out the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which also asses penalties against companies that report false debts on your credit record. Even though these are federal laws, you can enforce those rights in state courts and even in small claims courts and justice of the peace courts.
