Legal Question in Technology Law in Louisiana

Emails

Are email addresses considered confidential information? i.e if I work at an architecture firm and while there, obtain client email addresses, once I leave, would using these addresses be some violation of confidentiality (absent a specific confidentiality agreement or nonsolicitation agreement)?

Re: Emails

The firm's employee manual, your position with the firm, your employment contract, the firm's privacy policy regarding its customer's information, and possibly conversations you've previously had with your employer are some of the things to consider here. Also what you use the addresses for would obviously be important. Louisiana is not enforce noncompetition clauses/contracts as rigidly as some states, such as Texas.

For example, using the addresses to send spam would obviously be illegal, which would also prejudice anyone reviewing your having gathered the information. Using it to try to get customers away from the firm is not necessarily against public policy, but all the factors listed above would need to be considered.
