If you paid by credit card or paypal, you can lodge a dispute with your credit card company or paypal.

If the store is local and you did not pay with a credit card, you can file a small claims suit in the local city court or justice of the peace court where the store is located. You will have to pay court costs up front, but they have to pay you back for that if you win.

You can also file a complaint with the BBB and, if the store is a BBB member, you can also ask for the BBB's mediation program.

Before you do all of that, make certain that you are entitled to a refund. See if the store had some notice in the store which said something like "No returns on sale items", or "all sales final". If so, your case is a lot tougher to win and you would essentially have to prove that the store knew or should have known that the item was defective when it was sold to you.

Your last option would be to take it up with the manufacturer.
