account turned in to collection agency

my husband received a medical bill for services rendered on july 31, i made a payment on aug 9, and received a notice from a collections agency aug 27-can the hospital do this if you are making a payment and keeping the account current, with no notice at all? no letter, no phone call. what can i do to dispute this if anything?

I suppose if they are owed the money, they can seek to collect it, but this sounds highly unusual. If you receive a notice from a third party debt collector (a collector not employed within the hospital) you can dispute the debt or ask for validation of it, and their initial communication should tell you that you have a right to obtain verification of the debt. If you do not receive such a notice, you may have rights against the collection agency under the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act.
