Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Louisiana

Collections on a debt from 1990

I was called at my place of employment by a individual claiming to be an investigator for the parish in which I work, not live. He told me I was being sued and he was on his way to ser papers. He provided information for me to contact the company in question and they offered to settle because I had not received prior notice, but I had to pay by electronic check with email confirmation. I declined and said I wanted to see the papers - the investigator never came to the office. There is no record of this claim on my credit report - what options do I have?

If you get served with papers, consult with a consumer protection attorney ASAP.

If the debt is from 1990 and no payments or charges have been made in the last 3 years, you no longer legally owe the debt.

If a debt collector is the "investigator" who called you, you may have a good FDCPA case.
