Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Louisiana
debt collection
According to a collection agency, I incurred a debt Oct 1, 1998, it was turned over to collections Dec 21, 2001. This new agency got the account Dec 17 2007 and sent me a letter wanting $569.34. First of all I'm not sure the debt is mine, secondly, how long do they have to collect a debt, it has been 9 years and 3 mths since the debt was made and they are just now contacting me? I've lived in the same place since Jan 99? Any help will be appreciated.

Re: debt collection
It depends on when you last made a payment on the account. It's three years from the last charge or payment on an account.
You may want to see an attorney about this one as you might have an action against the collection agency.
