Can a debt collection involve my partners assets?

I defaulted on a student loan years ago and now they found me. They said they could send a marshal to seize his assets. We are not married to each other, but have lived together for seven years. Is there anything they can do to him? Can this affect him in anyway?

Louisiana is a community property state and any indebtedness you acquire during your marriage obligates both you and your husband. Hence if you were never married, your friend has no obligation to your indebtedness. Next has a judgment, default or otherwise been entered in the action to collect on your loan? You must determine at where you are in the litigation in order for an atty to advise you on when your assets may be seized. Louisiana has an aggressive state agency that seeks to collect on defaulted student loans. Routinely lawsuits are filed and summons issued which when unanswered often result in default judgments. Without these facts, I cannot give you a definitive answer.
