Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Louisiana
A friend was incarsarated with a couple of charges and requested me to bail him out by signing a promissionary note and, in so many words and form, it states that if the person getting bail out doesn't show up in court on the court date than that person will recieve a warrant out for their arrest and be back in jail. The person did ended up in jail and now one year later, I get a collection notice saying I owe this bail bond debt and I have to pay it or there will be a lawsuit against me. With that being said, if I lose the lawsuit I will end up paying the debt and the fees for the lawsuit. My question is it okay for them to put that on me having to pay the whole thing and have it on my record of this debt? Does this affect my credit?

When you bail someone out, you usually either post a property or cash bond or you pay a premium to a surety (appearance insurer) who then posts the bond. If you signed a promissory note, you obligated yourself to a debt much more onerous than a bail bond. It will affect your credit. You need to hire an attorney because you should have been getting notices of all court hearings regarding his bond and bond seizure, etc.
