Judgements

I received a judgement against me in 1991 from a personnel agency for 989.00. This judgement has been on my credit report for 10 years. I received a letter the other day from a lawfirm in Baton Rouge, Louisiana saying that they have refiled the judgement in 2004, and that now I owe over 3,000.00. How can this be? Once a judgement is placed, isn't it done and over with? Can I fight this?

Judgments are good for a period of years, varying from state to state. They can be refiled and extended by doing certain things, again varying from state to state. In the meantime, while the judgment is unsatisfied, it is usually accruing interest.

Going from a little less than $1000 to over $3000 is the magic of compound interest.

You may be able to fight it. Speak with a Louisiana lawyer, because that's where the fight will take place.
