Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Louisiana

After leasing a new apartment with the complex where I was currently residing, I accidentally made my first 3 payments to the wrong unit. I informed them of the error. The complex issued a refund to me and my roommate. Turns out that refund was my rent. Can I be held responsible for repayment of the entire check?

You owe 3 months rent. Paying them less than that can get you evicted and be sued for the balance owed. Why would they refund and not simply credit the correct Apartment?
