Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Louisiana
worthless check
On Jan. 2005 i wrote a check to a hospital for my son's medical bills. My son was 32 years old. I stopped payment on the check after i had deposited the amount to cover it . my husband said our son should pay his own bills. So this is why i stopped payment on it. On June of the same year our son passed away. Last Friday which was June 30 2006 i recieved a letter from the hospital telling me to bring them the money or face crimnal charges. Am i responsible for this? Can go to jail? Donna

Re: worthless check
You must have a legitimate reason (i.e. did not receive goods or services) to stop payment on a check. You are probably still legally responsible for making good on the check.
