Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

1st degree vehicular negligent injury

What might happen to a 19 year old with those charges. He has 2 other charges on his record they are misdemeanor charges. There were minors in his car that were seriously injuried in the accident. We don't have much money for an attorney but I don't want my son to go to prison for a mistake I know he's sorry for.Could a public defender help my son. What kind of sentence could be handed down for the charge of 1st degree vehicular negligent injury. Is there something he can do now that might help him when he goes to court.

Re: 1st degree vehicular negligent injury

If convicted of 1st Degree Vehicular Negligent Injury, he faces a fine of up to $2,000, and imprisonment of up to 5 years. If convicted of both counts, he could face double that sentence. He must have been under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs for them to charge him with that harse a crime. Since you did not mention what his other "misdemeanors" were, I can't guess whether they might influence the outcome of these charges.
