Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

I was arrested for simple burglary. Do I need an attorney if this does not go to court to clear my record, an how do I find out who is pressing charges?

Hardy Parkerson Retired Attorney; now Law Professor

Dear LawGuru Friend,

Of course, you need an attorney! If and

when the case comes to court for arraignment (when

they read the charge against you and ask you how

you plead, whether guilty of not guilty), you

will be appointed a lawyer in the event your

finances are such that you can't afford one...

and few can. In the meantime, however, if you

will e-mail me your name and phone number to

[email protected], I will call you and

discuss your case with you and help you in any

way I can. There will be no charge, as I am now

retired from the practice of law. Don't treat this

matter lightly and assume it will just go away.

Nevertheless, there are things that you can do

now that may serve to get the District Attorney

not to press the charge.

Looking forward to hearing from you, I am

Sincerely,

Hardy Parkerson, J.D.
