This crime is a misdemeanor carrying up to six months in jail and/ or fine and costs. These fees are set by the judge but court cost is around $160, You will probably be placed on probation and ordered to pay restitution. The court will appoint a public defender if you can't afford an attorney-just ask. If this is your first offense and you are already going through the process of going to the military, inquire if the prosecutor has a pretrial diversion program, it is way to avoid prosecution by going through a probationary period, making restitution and paying fines. If you successfully complete it, the matter is dead-filed and no conviction appears on your record.

The thing that got my attention was about the Navy. Forget going to jail....if you get convicted of theft you might not be able to ever get into any of the armed services! My advice is that you ask for a court appointed attorney or speak to the prosecutor and be perfectly honest. You obviously stole something from someone, so you better make sure that the victim has been made whole and you are very very contrite for what you did. Then they may give you a break. Contact the Navy.....or at least a recruiter and ask what could keep someone out if they are charged with a crime.....you can ask a generic question without even mentioning you are about to enter the Navy.
