Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

Felony Drug Charges

My sister was arrested on 10 different possession/distribution drug charges and 1 Domestic Abuse from a while back. What are some ways to get her affordable representation and get her some rehab. help?

Re: Felony Drug Charges

The price of representation depends on the lawyers in or near the jurisdiction. As I have no idea where the charges are I have no idea what the cost might be.

Most criminal defense lawyers, including myself, would consider charging less for representation of one client in eleven matters than we might charge for eleven separate matters with eleven different clients.

Re: Felony Drug Charges

Dear Friend,

What Mr. Casanave has told you is correct. You just have to get on the phone and/or in your car and begin to talk to and/or visit lawyers in or near where the courthouse is and ask about representation and how much it will cost and all of that. Shop around! The cheapest lawyer is not necessarily the best, nor is the most expensive one. Some lawyers charge too much and some don't charge enough. But both types have the same responsibility. Don't be afraid to get on the phone and call lawyers to talk about this matter, since you youself are not the defendant. Most lawyers don't charge for just talking on the phone, especially if they think they might end up getting the case and making money. Of course, that's why lawyers practice law, for a living; that is, as a general rule. I would caution you against court-appointed lawyers, not that they are not good lawyers, and competent lawyers; but, as a general rule they have so many cases assigsned to them that they hardly know their clients' names, much less get the time, nor take the time, to work hard on thier cases, making the best effort possible to keep their clients out of jail and preserving asmuch as possible their clients' good police and criminal record. There is more to it all than this, but this is something to think about. Good luck to you and to your sister!

Sincerely,
