Do I need a lawyer?

A friend of mine got into a fist fight. The other girl hit her first, so she hit her back. The cops were called and the other girl got charged with I believe simple battery. My friend didnt get in any trouble but has to go to court with the girl who hit her. Does she have to hire a lawyer for this? She is not trying to sue or anything but she wants to press charges against the girl for hitting her. What does she need to do?

Did your friend receive a summons or a subpoena. If it is a summons she is accused of a crime and I would suggest she get a lawyer. If it is a subpoena she is being called to testify as a witness in the case. She should not need a lawyer for that.

It appears the State has already charged the other person with a crime. People often say they want to "press charges" but actually that is the State's job.
