Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

If a person, in Louisiana, was sentenced to ten years for drug charges and has already served about 3 years, is it ANYWAY possible that he/she could be released next year. My friend says the above conditions apply to him/her and that they were being released next year. However, the DOC says that his/her earliest release date is in 2018 which is about ten years from the date of conviction but the person insists that they are being released next year. I am thinking that he/she is being truthful and that the DOC is taking into account that his entire sentence was ten years and that "the earliest release date" may refer to include his/her time on parole after his early release.

Depending on the crime he was convicted of, he will be given credit for good time which can be two for one.
