Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana
Can representing yourself in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana be done successfully? I am a certified paralegal with over 20 years experience in civil litigation defense. I know Civil Code of Procedure and basic court rules. I was charged with a misdemeanor in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana and my ex-boss agreed to represent me, but now says he can't because he will be on trial out of state. I was considering representing myself, but didn't know if it can be done successfully. The charges are bogus and I didn't do it, and it comes down to my word against the other person. No other witnesses. I can't afford an attorney, but do not qualify for a public defender. Any advice?

Anyone may represent themselves. Misdemeanors often come down to one word against another and as you are familiar with the practice of law you know that the prosecution has the burden of beyone reasonable doubt. They will have to prove each element in the statute and there are defenses for some.
