Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana
Shoplifting
A few weeks ago, a friend and I were caught shoplifting. I had stolen roughly$150 worth of fashion jewelry. My friend was caught with roughly $330 worth of fashion jewelry. We were caught in the mall, 3 stores away from Macy's, which is where we stole from. For some reason, I am being charged with theft of $485 worth of jewelry, our combined total. Is this legal, even though we acted independently?

Re: Shoplifting
It is legal. The problem is that the $150 is a misdemeanor, but the $485 is a felony. I suspect you will be able to get it down to a misdemeanor and maybe even an 893 or 894 plea.

If you were working together then you were both "principals" to the entire theft. Yes, that is legal.
