Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

simple possession
I went on a tubing trip where you arrive at the end and are bussed by the owners to the drop off point. At the drop off point, before anyone got off of the bus, the narcotics unit took all of the coolers off of the bus and searched through them. In my cooler, they found a joint in a cigaratte box wrapped in two plastic bags along with--name removed--camera, some keys, etc. I was charged with misdemeanor simple possession of marijuana. My court date is sep. 9th and I am about to move to california to attend graduate school, which starts Sep. 18th. I have been told by a lawyer that this was an illegal search but I will not have time to challenge the charge and come back to court from California unless the case is heard that day. Do you think that this was an illegal search and is there a chance that I will not be allowed to go to graduate school? I have no prior convictions for anything and I can provide more circumstantial details if necessary. Thank you.
