Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

when does trespassing become criminal. Pulling a trailer between my property and my neighbors, I crossed his property line by 6 inches with out knowing. the only damage was the depression of the grass from the tire. He brought it to my attention. I apologized for it. and we went on thought it was a done deal. 2 hours later the sheriff rolls up. He tells me that He could arrest me and take me to jail right then. went on this big thing about how I should not do it. I told the officer that i had apologized for it and said i wouldn't do it again. Since there was no damage and no intent is this a major crime

You should not be arrested for trespassing unless there is some concern about other activity. If you damaged his property, you may be responsible for the damage, however unless you intended to go on his property and damage it, it will not be a crime. It may have civil liability, but damages would have to be proven.
